If an emergency occurred and you had 20 minutes to leave you home, would you be ready? That question was posed to Rotarians by Joanne Matthews, a long time volunteer with Canadian Red Cross.

Joanne’s  topic was emergency preparedness and she began by challenging her audience with thought provoking circumstances Joanne Matthewsconcerning emergencies Drydenites experienced over the years. “What happens if we had an electrical outage, a heavy snowstorm? How well would our friends and neighbours with disabilities be able to manage? What about pets? Do you have enough medication on hand to cover a week’s needs? Would you have enough food and water?”

There are publications available to help prepare for such emergencies. Visit www.emergencymanagementontario.ca  or www.getprepared.gc.ca to see what can apply to you.

Canadian Red Cross has lots of experience in helping to manage such incidents. During evacuations, a big part of their contribution is the tracking of persons that have registered at collection areas. They are there for the people when disasters or emergencies happen. They can provide food, clothing and shelter to meet people’s basic needs. ..And, they continue to be pro-active in emergency preparedness and accident prevention with teaching first aid courses, basic swimming lessons, safe boating and violence and abuse prevention.

Located at an office on 103 Duke Street, the Canadian Red Cross Society is looking for volunteers.
