Rotarian Lisa Turcotte introduced our RYLA ( Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) students  Jake Wickstrom, Abigail Tourond, Alex Urquhart, and Hannah Szmon.

Parents, Ken Wickstrom and Lois Tourond , teacher Sherry Ambridge, and KPDSB education director, Jack McMaster were also our guests.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary's leadership training program for
young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range, such as 14-18. RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth.

Its aims are:
  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth.
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

Each year the District 5550 RYLA camp is hosted by the Rotary Club of Regina Oskaya at the Anglican Church Camp in Clear Lake, Manitoba.

Three of the students were in junior camp while Hannah Szmon went to the Senior camp.

During their presentation all RYLA youth thanked Rotary for one of the greatest experiences in their young lives. Jake learned that as a leader, you don’t have to do it all. "Just make sure things that need to be done by others get done," he said.

Abigail Tourond told Rotarians she met a lot of new friends, while Alex Urquhart indicated that leadership stays with you. Hannah Szmon concluded the presentation by indicating that they were, "all one happy family."
