Hit by a “perfect storm” of never-ending bad news the citizens of Dryden are beginning to regroup. To the rescue are people like Suzanne Scherban who fostered the idea of holding a Dryden Days of Summer, a street fair aimed at attracting people to the downtown core.

“This is about a new attitude for our community. We can’t change history but we can change an attitude” Suzanne explained to Rotary Club members. She began using her contacts at the Chamber of Commerce to help organize a meeting to explore ways of adding more excitement and energy to the downtown core. Twenty-five people attended a meeting that produced a small committee and strong support from the Chamber of Commerce.

Picking Thursdays for the street fair would be a great start to the weekend...and the time of 3 to 7 pm would have the least disruption to area traffic. So each Thursday the City agreed to close a small part of King Street between Whyte Avenue and Earl Avenue just for that purpose. Draws such as skateboarding demos, vintage car displays, young firemen, Ukrainian Dancers are popular draws.  Local artisans and food vendors are also there while local shops are extending their hours to accommodate the fair.

Suzanne explained this is a perfect opportunity for people to learn what their downtown has to offer and it doesn’t have to cost anything. Check it out next Thursday and check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DrydenDaysOfSummer  for a list of the highlights each week.
