Rtn. Lucille Ayers, club literacy chair, shared information on “The Free Reading Program” at the October 8th meeting.
The Free Reading Program is a comprehensive Kindergarten to Grade 6 online learning program developed by a Canadian Rotarian. There are 266 learning units and over 3600 interactive learning activities, which are designed to engage young learners and instill confidence through a quiz and success-based teaching approach.
This comprehensive award-winning program provides thorough coverage of a reading curriculum at the Kindergarten Level. Hundreds of activities reinforce concepts and ensure complete mastery.
It began as a project of the Rotary Club of Scarborough on June 2, 2016. The program has earned recognition and awards at all levels of Rotary including the Doug Dempsey Literacy Award for District 7070, 3 Rotary International House of Friendship booth awards and a Rotary Zone Public Image award.
The Program includes:
- Readiness Skills: Picture Vocabulary - 17 Lessons, Visual Skills - 28 Lessons, Auditory Skills - 16 Lessons, Basic Concepts - 11 Lessons
- Sight Words: Word Lists 1-5 - 44 Lessons
- Colors, Numbers, and More: 39 Lessons
- Stories: 5 Stories with activities - 60 Lessons
- Books and More: 3 Lessons
The Free Reading Program is free for students in need and sponsored by donors who want to help make a change. The program is an online studying tool, designed to reinforce fundamental reading skills. With over 3,500 activities accessible online, the program is used by over 300,000 students in 185 countries. It is not aligned with any Canadian provincial educational curriculum.
The impact is diverse and widespread. From new English learners, to students looking for something to curb summertime learning loss, anyone is welcome to give the program a try.
The Club would become a portal for the community which would allow residents and others to sign on and use the material.
